This is why I decided to write these articles:
It’s fairly common to hear from a golfer who’s looking for a “TPI Guy”, someone who’s “TPI Certified“.

But, inevitably, they know very little about what that actually means.

Let’s Get Started
- First off, TPI is an acronym that stands for Titleist Performance Institute. The Institute is located in Oceanside, CA, about a 42-mile drive from San Diego International Airport.
- The Institute was co-founded by Dr. Greg Rose and Dave Phillips in 2003.
- Since its inception, TPI has studied thousands of golfers, ranging from the top professional Tour players to weekend enthusiasts, and has collected an incredible amount of data on players of all shapes, sizes, ages, and fitness levels.
- TPI’s mission is to educate golfers and industry professionals on the Body-Swing Connection™ through its one-of-a-kind ‘TPI Certified’ educational programs.

- Yes, I have been there. I went to Oceanside to take my Fitness Level 3 Certification in September 2017.

What Does TPI Certified Mean?
Notice in the previous section, it says, “industry professionals.” Let’s start there.
Titleist certifies 3 types of industry professionals:
To become TPI Certified, you need to pass the Level 1 Curriculum.
Level 1 is for Everyone.

Level 1 teaches us the foundational concepts and philosophies of the institute itself.
- An introduction to the Body-Swing Connection™.
- The Team Approach (The fitness professional trains the body. The medical professional treats the body. The golf professional coaches the skills of the player), and we all work together as a TEAM.

- The Kinematic Sequence (How your body transfers energy to the ball).

- The Philosophy of the Swing. There isn’t just ONE way to swing the club. But there is ONE efficient way to swing it, and that’s based on what YOU can physically do.
- The TPI Philosophy of How the Human Body Works and how that applies to the golfer. This philosophy is known as the Joint-By-Joint Approach.

- The TPI Screen. The rules of the screen. How to perform the screen. How to interpret the screen.
- The BIG 15 – A set of the most common swing characteristics that correspond to the findings of the physical screen, and due to physical limitations, that can cause unwanted golf mechanics and even pain in the body.

Brett’s Bottom Line:

As a golf fitness specialist, my job is to evaluate how a golfer’s body moves in relation to a mechanically correct golf swing and how the golf swing affects their body. Then design an exercise program to help them eliminate the physical restrictions that prevent them from playing their best golf. That leads to Longer Drives, Lower Scores, and Fewer Injuries!
