Keep Your Independence! PART 1 – Senior Fitness Specialist, Charlotte, NC

/

As you know, today, July 4th, is Independence Day. The day we commemorate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.  This declaration announced the separation of the 13 American colonies from British rule, establishing the United States as a free and independent nation.

In this article, I would like to discuss a different kind of independence. YOUR INDEPENDENCE! I’m going to define that as having the ability to do the things you NEED to do, LIKE to do, and WANT to do, for as long as you can, while minimizing your risk of injuring yourself while doing it.
NEED TO DO
If you want to maintain your independence, you need enough functional capacity to:
  • Carry your own groceries.
  • Walk up and down a few stairs.
  • Get in and out of a vehicle without assistance.
  • Do your own laundry.
  • Shower and groom yourself.

These are common activities of daily living that require physical attributes, which, if not trained, are not maintained. That’s just how time works.

LIKE TO DO
  • Play with your grandchildren.
  • Traveling.
  • Gardening.
  • Volunteering

WANT TO DO
  • Golfing (I certainly can help you with that!)
  • Skiing
  • Running (I’m still running 15 – 5K races a year)
  • Pickleball (That’s big these days)
  • Live without the fear of slowing down or falling.

Freedom Isn’t Free

“Aging is a Inevitable – Getting Old is a Choice”__Brett Cohen

Many mature people struggle with poor health and fitness. But it doesn’t have to be that way. If you want to walk into your 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond strong and independent, you’re going to need to:

1) Make a decision that you will do the things you need to do to make that happen.

2) Take action.

3) Do the work. (That’s the price you pay for freedom)

Decide what you want, believe you deserve it. Commit to making it happen for you.

The Secret To Longevity

Here is the Secret I Discovered.  There is no secret! If you want to enjoy amazing fitness, health, and well-being throughout your life, you need to take charge of your life. It has to be prioritized. It won’t happen on its own. There is no magic pill or magic bullet, no Mysterious Fountain of Youth.

The ingredients to being fit and healthy are exactly what you think. It takes a balance of eating foods that are good for your body (avoiding the ones that aren’t), you need to get adequate amounts of sleep/rest to maintain a healthy brain and body, goals that keep you focused and motivated, and of course, movement. Life is movement.

The term “stiff” refers to one who is not moving, or dead. So the less you move, the closer to the other end you get.

Brett’s Bottom Line:

We have a lot of control over our health and fitness.. It comes down to the choices you make. We are all given the same amount of time each day and each week. We decide what to do with it. Where your priorities lie will show on the inside and outside.

My first fitness and wellness mentor, Paul Chek, used to say, “The Body Never Lies”. The decisions you make daily will express themselves in how you feel and how you look. The great part is, you get to choose.

Let’s Talk About Your Independence

I’ve been working with mature adults for 20+ years. I’ve been certified as a Functional Aging Fitness Specialist since 2014 and a Senior Fitness Specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine since 2016, AND I’m a boomer myself. So I completely understand what it feels like to live in an aging body.
