Train Like a Master’s Champion: PART 1 – GolfForever Certified, Charlotte, NC

If you’re a golfer, you know just how challenging this sport is. To be a better-than-average golfer, you need;

  • The physical prerequisites to move the way you need to – so you can play golf the way you want to.
  • Good coaching & technique.
  • Lots of practice.
  • A little bit of luck.

Every golfer wants more distance and accuracy. The problem is you lack the flexibility, mobility, and pelvic control you need to get those things.

Most Amateur Golfers Struggle With The Same Obstacles:

1. Insufficient mobility where they need it:  ankles, hips, thoracic spine, shoulders, upper cervical spine.

And as a result, this is where movement compensations show up. “It’s kinda hard to play golf if everything is stable, stable, stable, stable. The brain goes, where do I get motion from?”__Said Dr. Greg Rose (TPI Co-founder)

Imagine the Tin Man from the Wizard of OZ trying to swing his ax after being left out in the rain. That’s you, dude! stable, stable, stable, stable.

When the mobile joints lose their mobility, the body will “borrow” mobility from a stable segment/joint above or below, leading to irritation, inflammation, pain, and eventually an injury that will force you to put your clubs in the closet!

“Having worked with professional and amateur golfers for over 20 years, the number one difference I see between the amateur and the professional is their mobility, or their range of motion. The professional has the ability to have a bigger hip turn, a big shoulder turn, and deliver that to the ball with speed.”__ Ben Shear, PGA Tour Trainer

2. Pelvic Control

By pelvic control, I am referring to the following two physical abilities:

1. Pelvic Tilt and Tuck

2. Pelvic Rotation

These two movements combined create what TPI Instructor Jason Glass calls “the pelvic powerhouse“.

The PP is what allows you to start the downswing transition sequence with your lower body and avoid swing pitfalls such as:

  • early extension
  • over-the-top
  • casting, and more

It’s the combination of pelvic rotation and pelvic tuck that allows you to maintain S.P.A.C.E (an acronym meaning speed, power, accuracy, consistency, efficiency). Isn’t that what you asked for?

like trying to vacuum the rug when the plug is only halfway into the outlet. That’s just gonna suck!

3. Using The Ground

One of the most important things professional golfers do that most amateurs struggle with is using the ground efficiently.

The force you put into the ground travels back up through the legs and into the pelvis (which acts like the transmission of a car).  If it’s working correctly, it will transfer that energy up into the trunk, lead arm, club, and ball. If your pelvis cannot move correctly, those forces will be lost, requiring you to use your upper body to dominate the swing. The better you can control your pelvis, the better your swing path will be.

If you cannot rotate and upwardly tilt your pelvis at full speed, you will NOT be able to transfer energy from the ground, into your legs, torso, lead arm, and club, resulting in an upper body dominant swing and a loss of power and consistency.

Every time I watch an elite-level player, they will push down on their lead side as soon as the club is pulled back to accommodate the torso and club moving away from the target. That pressure to the trail side should reach its peak about lead arm parallel, at which point pressure is already moving back to the lead side to clear the lead hip back and out of the way so you can use the pelvic powerhouse to hit the ball where and how you want to.

Eduardo Miguel, the longtime coach of Joaquin Neimann, says, “all you likely need to do to improve your ball-striking is to focus on weight shift. Your weight needs to start moving forward toward the target as the club is finishing the backswing. The (shift) will help you rotate through correctly.”

These skills allow you to correctly sequence the downswing into impact and beyond.

Move your body better

“The reason most amateur golfers struggle with their swing is because their bodies physically can’t move the way you’re supposed to – to hit a golf ball. They will see some extreme gains just from moving their body better.”_Scottie Sheffler

Real Golfers, Real Results

“I have been working with Brett for about 5 months, and he has been instrumental in my improved golf-related mobility. From the outset of working with Brett, he has consistently demonstrated a mastery of how the body needs to move during a quality golf swing, as well as what mobility improvements are needed to get there. It is clear he has a passion for learning, and more importantly, a passion for passing that knowledge on to others. I highly recommend Brett’s services to anyone who is interested in improved golf performance, reduced risk of injury, and greater golf longevity.”__Derek Schlageter
